Store your luggage around Trikala with Bounce

Most international travelers never stray far from the Aegean Sea when visiting Greece, but there are plenty of solid travel destinations in the country’s heartland worth checking out. Obviously, Hellenic history runs deep in every corner of Greece and beyond, so you can count on finding wonderful historic landmarks and ruins even in the most unassuming places. One of the top places in the center of Greece is Trikala, which is situated in the heart of the Thessaly Region.

With the Pindus Mountain Range in the background and nestled up to the banks of the Lithaois River, Trikala provides ample natural beauty to complement its many archaeological sites and modern city center. One of the city's highlights is the 16th-century Fortress of Trikala, which dates back to Greece’s fascinating Ottoman Era. This imposing castle, along with dozens of other ruins and historic sites, showcase the crosspoint of cultural influences that inform modern Greece, with Byzantine, Turkish, and Hellenic cultures.

Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Trikala:

Luggage storage in Trikala

Unlike a highly metropolitan city like Athens, Trikala’s limited infrastructure leaves little room for luggage storage. The transit facilities don't offer storage lockers, and the landmarks tend to be outdoor archaeological sites without amenities. If you’re trying to drop the bags off at the hotel but aren’t sure if the concierge or bellhop will take the bags, you can always contact guest services before your visit. This might not always be convenient, though.

The best option for luggage storage Trikala has available would be a service like Bounce. Because they partner with local shops and businesses, Bounce is able to offer the most convenient luggage storage locations along with the best features. The mobile app makes it simple to find and book luggage storage at the most convenient storage spot. With 24/7 customer support from our helpful and friendly staff, Bounce provides a stress-free experience. Bounce is also more flexible than storage lockers because there are less strict size limitations, so if you need to store heavy bags or specialty items, the storage locations will have room.

Trikala city guide

Top things to do in Trikala

The center of town - and the best place to start - would be Plateia Varvakeion, the town’s central square. It’s lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants, and Trikala’s food scene certainly punches above its weight class, with magnificent tavernas showcasing regional Greek delicacies and modern bistros for any occasion. If you’re an adventurer, hitting the countryside for hiking, cycling, and even horseback riding is a solid way to spend an afternoon. Of course, the main pastime in Trikala is sightseeing, and there are plenty of opportunities through the town’s many churches and archaeological sites.

Museums in Trikala

Trikala Castle

This impressive fortress dates back to the 6th century when Roman Emperor Justinian built it on the former site of Trikali’s Acropolis to guard the city. It’s been frequently updated throughout the centuries, which explains the mosaic of architectural influences ranging from Roman to Byzantine to Ottoman. Its perch atop the hill provides stunning panoramic views of the town, and you can admire the iconic 16th-century clock. There are also sprawling gardens surrounding the castle definitely worth taking a stroll through. There are three levels of the castle, with a ring on each part of the hill. The lower fortress is the most purposeful for defense, the middle is the largest, and the inner fortress at the top is the most ornamental. Essentially, no trip to Trikala is complete without touring this place,

Tsitsanis Museum

Housed in Trikala’s Ottoman baths, this is easily the city’s best museum for taking a deep dive into the complex history of this part of Greece, with a wide range of exhibits covering oft-overlooked subjects. There are exhibits exploring gender roles in Greek Antiquity, which isn't always covered in museums. The exhibit's plentiful information details the city’s architectural intricacies and how they came to be. The history of the building is also covered, with the fascinating lifespan of the Turkish baths being repurposed into a prison before becoming a museum.

Make sure to visit Old Town

The Varousi and Manavika districts make up Old Town and can be explored in an afternoon. Varousi was built by Christians and clusters around the base of the fortress. These are fairly distinct from the more modern parts of Trikala and have been given conservation distinction protecting the oldest buildings from redevelopment. Most structures date back to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, but there are older buildings. Manavika is where you’ll find the oldest buildings in the neighborhood, with a mix of Hellenic and Byzantine architecture.

Shopping in Trikala

Plateia Varvakeion

The town’s central square is certainly a solid place to window shop for a bit, but it really functions best as an introduction to the city. With beautiful architecture and a bustling atmosphere, it's a great place to grab a coffee and people-watch in the morning and an even better meeting place.

Trikkiotiki Agora

While you won't find luxury goods or brands, this traditional market is a great way to buy a little bit of produce in the morning, shop through some handcrafted goods, and otherwise experience a traditional Greek market.

Old Town

The historic center of Trikala is lined with quaint family-run businesses selling goods like artisanal foods, jewelry, antiques, and handcrafted folk items. This is easily the best place to buy a souvenir or gift, but simply wandering through the neighborhood is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Restaurants in Trikala

To Xani

This upscale restaurant in the city center serves straightforward Greek without the modern twists that have made some Mediterranean cuisine more homogenous. Expect substantial portions of spiced lamb and other meat-heavy dishes. There's a catch-of-the-day option, but it's slightly short on seafood when compared to coastal cities. Their wine cellar features a wide range of vintages from across Greece, which has made To Xani a destination for enthusiasts.

Mirtilo Cafe

If you're sightseeing around Trikali and want something approachable to eat, stop by this trendy spot on Amberg Square that turns out everything from hotdogs to pizzas. Granted, these are elevated versions of these familiar favorites. Their lunch menu is a highlight, with a pork pancetta burger and crispy chicken bao bun being the go-tos.

Boulogiorgos

The best bakery in Trikala is this masterful confectionery from Thessaloniki-trained Panagiotis Boulogiorgos, who returned to his hometown to set up this inventive bakery. They specialize in producing regional and niche desserts, and pastries. One of the more curious things you can try is halva, as it’s made with corn starch, sugar, melted clarified butter, and toasted almonds and they use authentic copper cookware to prepare it.

Conclusion

If you're a history buff, there's no better place to travel to than Greece. Trikala may not be at the top of your list, but it's a worthy addition to any sightseeing trek through this wonderful country. Don't let your bags get in the way of admiring some of the richest archaeology in the world. Download the Bounce mobile app and find the most secure place to store your bag in Trikala and in other Greek destinations like Athens, Heraklion, and Santorini!
