Activities and Attractions in Fort William

Great Glen Way

This path follows the Great Glen fault line and spans 127 kilometers (79 miles) between Fort William and Inverness. Hiking and biking are common ways to experience the trail, which can often be completed within a week. Trail travelers who are on time constraints can embark on a shorter trip. A roundtrip trek along the Fort William-to-Gairlochy Route takes two days to hike, leading past some of the region’s most notable sights.

Whether you’re planning on traversing the whole trail or just a portion, it’s imperative to come prepared. Rain gear, maps, and bug netting are recommended, as some sections of the path run through some pretty thick wilderness. Prefer to follow the fault line from the water? Rent a sea kayak or canoe from a local outfitter or join a guided tour.

Lower Falls

This small-scale waterfall is a tranquil spot along the River Nevis. It’s just a few miles southeast of Fort William, perfect for a quick outing. Before you head for the falls, drop your bags at a Bounce luggage storage site. You’ll want to experience this slice of nature bag-free. The falls run below a road bridge, and a walking trail can be accessed nearby.

Weather conditions will dictate the intensity of the water flow. Visit on a dry day, and you can get close to the smooth rocks along the shoreline; stop by after a good rain to observe the falls’ rushing waters. Amp up your waterfall experiences by heading two miles upstream to the larger Steall Falls. It’s one of the tallest waterfalls in Scotland, cascading from nearly 400 feet above. If you plan to hike to this awe-inspiring spot, use caution along the trail, as some sections are pretty rugged.

Ben Nevis

This 4,400-foot mountain is the tallest in the UK and is often called “The Ben.” The mountain towers are just a few miles east of Fort Williams, within easy reach via taxi, bus, or car. The Ben Nevis Mountain Path is an excellent way to explore the peak. Outdoor adventurers travel from around the globe to “bag the Ben.”

Hikers with moderate skills should be able to complete the 10-mile trip up the mountain; most trekkers wrap up the up-and-back route in about eight hours. Hit the trail on a clear day, and you’ll enjoy some fantastic views from the top. Bring warm clothes for the wind-swept summit, and be sure your boots have good treads for the rocky downward trek. Most importantly, leave large bags behind or store them at one of our luggage storage facilities in town.

Treasures of the Earth Museum

If you prefer a day that doesn’t involve strenuous walks and hiking and are interested in geology, head to the Treasures of the Earth museum to view its extensive collection of precious stones and fossils. Exhibits are informative, and a self-led tour typically takes about 30 minutes to complete. Stop by the gift shop for a couple of shiny souvenirs.

Treasures of the Earth Museum bag policy

Although a small museum that won’t take much time to explore, it’s best to do it without the burden of baggage. The museum’s bag policy is not clearly specified, and you may not find left luggage lockers for your suitcases or oversized items. Store bulky items in one of our luggage storage facilities near this attraction. For a fixed price per bag per day, it’s hard to beat our affordable prices.

Lochaber Cafe

Fuel up for the day at the local train station’s Lochaber Cafe. Try a full Scottish breakfast or deep-fried Haddock and choose a strawberry tart to round off your meal. Prices are excellent, and so is the service. It’s a great stop to refuel before boarding the train.

The Geographer

Located on Fort William’s main artery, High Street, you’ll find one of the best restaurants in town serving comfort food for everyone’s taste. They even brew their own beer. The venue is popular among tourists, bloggers and influencers, and it can get busy. But don’t worry, the service is fast. Go for the venison stew or the mussels with garlic bread if you prefer seafood. End your meal with a Banana sponge dessert, and you’ll want to be back again the next day.

The Crofter Bar and Restaurant

If you want to enjoy dinner with live music, this is just the place. Located near the Royal Bank of Scotland on High Street, this community pub and restaurant is the closest to a traditional Scottish bar, so expect a comfort food menu and TV sport. Try their turkey roast, scampi, or the chicken and veggie soup of the day. The place is always busy and noisy, and just what you need after a long day of hiking.
